Integrity: I make quality things and represent myself and my work with accuracy and care. I meet others in the spirit of collaboration. I conduct my business according to my ethics as best I can.
Clarity: I aim for precision, mind the minor details, and offer clear and timely communication to my customers, clients, and friends. If I can’t do a thing, I’ll let you know. If I can do a thing but it’ll take a while, I’ll let you know that too.
Consideration: I do my best to understand my clients’ wishes and needs, and listen well during consultations and revisions. The needs of the project come first.
In personal projects, my process involves examining material from many angles before making statements. (Note: consideration does not equal centrism. Weighing multiple angles does not mean agreeing with all angles, or requiring halfway compromises with terrible ideas. I am strongly opinionated.)
Depth: Flash and substance both, please! I love a deep-diving theme under the surface every bit as much as I love a pristine visual front and center. Mood lies between them. I ask myself sticky questions and take my time in ruminations. The magic happens when beauty and truth reflect one another.
Haunted Wilderness: This last value’s admittedly ironic given that I’m a cozy, bookish fellow and my work keeps me painfully indoorsy. (Most of it can’t be done outside, and I can’t focus to save my life when there’s curious, moving nature things about.--Squirrel!—I compensate by making my studio space look like a woods.)
Love and respect the wild things. Take little but pictures and leave little trace. Only step off the trail when you’re willing to re-enter the food-chain. Bears and wolves are not the only biting critters. Give the mysteries their space, but wind them into the art as is fitting and fair when they grace the backs of your eyelids. Halloween is for always if you hold it in your heart.
I pay my flora and fauna models. 5% Of all profits get donated to environmental non-profits or regional animal shelters on the turn of the year. Past causes include the NRDC, the National Wildlife Federation, Dakin Humane Society in Springfield, MA, and Black Cat Rescue in Boston. 2020 Donations will go to Mass Audubon for statewide nature conservation.
